ENVIRAL® Austria

A long-term experiment was started by ENVIRAL® on September 8, 2012 in the course of which various coating systems are being tested for their suitability for underwater use. On November 2, 2012 we again reported on the launch of this study, so let's recapitulate: several sheet metal samples were finished with two different coating systems from different powder paint producers and then permanently mounted on the hull of the Danube ferry at Ottensheim so that one part of the sheet metal would be in continuous contact with water (cf. Fig. 1). The results of the initial examination of the coated surface after approximately 800 hours of permanent exposure to river water were positive: all measured values proved to be excellent.

The test sheets have since been examined at regular intervals. On November 17, 2012, i.e. after about 1,680 hours of water contact, no defects or traces of corrosion were discovered on the sheet metal. An examination conducted on January 5, 2013 showed that after approx. 2,700 hours, flotsam was becoming entangled around the sheets, scouring their surfaces. These minor defects, however, do not impair the corrosion protection provided by their powder coating (cf. Fig. 2).

The most recent check of the sheet metal samples was performed on March 3, 2013 after about 4,000 hours of continuous contact with river water. The only defect that was discovered was some powder paint flaking around the edge of one sheet (cf. Fig. 3). What caused this damage is unclear but it seems that it had been caused by mechanical stress. Anyway, these flaking spots will not be touched up to ensure insights with regard to the coating's infiltration with corrosion in this area.

We will keep you posted about the progress of this study in our News.
