New gymnasium of Leibniz Grammar School – 96 tons of steel powder coated!
One of the first large-scale powder coating projects of ENVIRAL® was the powder coating of the steel structure of Leibniz Grammar School in Berlin Kreuzberg. 96 tons of steel incorporated in the roof structure, in load-bearing columns and in design elements on the outside had to be protected from corrosion, and at the same time a harmonious colour concept had to be achieved for the new sports hall. The contracting authority, the Department of Education, Administration and Organisation of the District Office Berlin Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, commissioned architect Mr. Hundertmark of the Hundertmark Berlin architects’ office. Mr. Hundertmark decided for powder coating of the steel structure. His decision was based not only on the high quality of the surface finish, but also on the ecological and economic processing of powder coating and above all on the very high corrosion protection achieved with this process.
An extraordinary challenge from the technical point of view was the powder coating of the 16 load-bearing columns that support the roof of the sports hall on the gable sides of the building. Each of these columns is 9 m long, has a diameter of approx. 40 cm and weighs about 900kg. In addition to the pre treatment required for powder coating of steel structures for outdoor use, and two layers of powder coating (primer plus RAL 7044 mat top coat) a third top coat was added with anti-graffiti powder coating (special, transparent powder coating with anti-graffiti properties).
Further photos and information on this project are available from our reference list and in the technical article published by us under the title “Powder coating – new trends in surface finishing of steel”.
